Just a quick one this week. My beloved is downstairs cooking for me and I wish to join in on it; the simmering, cutting, roasting, boiling. The transformation of the vegetables we have grown together into something even more delicious. What have you all been cooking up this week?
This week we’re really in the thick of Mercury Retrograde. Wires crossing, heavy feelings and a whole bunch of re-emergence. On the farm we suddenly have all our cooler season crops back, making way for fresh greens and all sorts of roots. As the equinox approaches, this time of year always makes me think about taking up indoor tasks that have been forgotten over the summer months.
General Tarot Reading for the week of 19th September 2022- Six of Swords Reversed
This card shows a figure paddling a boat across the water, within the boat are balanced several swords and two shrouded figures. What always springs to mind when looking at this card is the plight of people seeing refuge, reaching out with the whole of their humanity in the hope of finding somewhere better; safer. I think this card is pretty prescient for a time when we are super distracted by the death of QE2, it serves as a reminder of the atrocities committed by the British Empire. When most of the world, who had both famine and genocide inflicted on them at the hands of the living embodiment of imperialism, are celebrating your Queen’s passing, you’re probably on the wrong side of history. This momentous occasion dwarfs the palpable and real issues that people face both in the UK and outside it. Struggles caused or exacerbated by a consolidation of power and the imbalance therein.
I’ll step off my soapbox to talk about this card a little more. With swords representing thoughts, the upright meaning of this card is that of transition and change. Like maybe the death of a monarch. It could be seen as a right of passage, one where you may have to have your thoughts prepared or to defend your stance on something. For this week the card is in the reversed position. This could suggest resistance to change. I think of it more as the protection that you have built up, the thought patterns and methods of transport, no longer serve you. The water the figures appear to be crossing is calm now, suggesting that there is less to worry about than before when the protective swords were put in place. This card seems to say it is time to let your guard down. To shake off protection, that served you well, and adapt to this new stage.
I recently was on a call with Dirt Hoe Coven, where Katie of Crystal Gazers Collective was discussing the minor arcana. They spoke of the sixes being about the finding of community. On the journey that the minor arcana takes the six cards are those of finding harmony not only within transition but with others. In the proceeding cards, there is more of a focus on studying and now the lessons must be applied to those around you. When thinking of this card and the current climate, I wonder what your community role is. How can you bring care to others and where can you let them provide for you? Using your thoughts to guide, protect and show others the way.
As the night catches up with day this week, ask yourself what thoughts you have in place for times of trouble? How are they different for times of smooth sailing? How are you finding your place within community? Where are you guiding? Where are you being protected? How can letting your guard down make you stronger than ever?
