Recharge and get raucous 🌻 The Sun
Tarot reading for the week of 19/12/22 ☀ Celebrate the darkest day with a little light.
Oh Christmas is incoming. Fast!
As a Christmas eve baby, I both love and loathe this time of year (it should be all about me). But also while gift giving stresses me out I love the idea of giving presents that aren’t physical. My best friend always gets experiences as a present this season and it is such a vibe. In that vein, I am super excited to say that Valentine Design Co, who did our wonderful logo, is offering gift cards for portraits.
As it happens so am I. Gift cards for tarot readings are now available, along with the usual selection for yourself. So why not give the gift of sight this year and set your loved one up for an intentional and illuminating 2023?
For me, accessibility is also a very important factor (you can read all about it here). I don’t want anyone to miss out on learning or benefiting from the tarot just because they aren’t in the perfect financial position to do so. Looking at you late-stage capitalism. So with that in mind, there are various price options available and I am always here to talk about other ways of payment; work trades, literal trades, and subsidised rates.
Ok and now onto the Tarot of the week. I’ve been hiking all over California hills recently and have been connecting with the odd but wonderful feeling of winter sun. So how fitting that this tarot card popped out.
Tarot for the week of 19/12/22: The Sun
Not to get all numerological on this one but the sun card is the 19th in the major arcana and this newsletter is set to publish on the 19th of December. Spooky. But also very with the mood of this time. While it might not feel like the sun belongs in the darkest month it’s timing is actually impeccable.
On the 21st of December, the Solstice (or Yule) will be happening. This is the shortest day of the year and heralds in the light just as it revels in the darkness. As someone trying to reconnect with the cyclical nature of the year, I love that even on the darkest day there is still some light, and after that point, the light just gets brighter and brighter.
The Sun card, as seen above is such a bright and zesty one. On it, a naked child rides a horse, in their hair and the fields behind them are bright yellow flowers and in the sky a powerful personified sun. The sun is a symbol of unending energy, the flow and force of life. It is often considered masculine, less changing than the moon but just as potent.
When I look at this card, the face within the sun reminds me of so many indigenous stories, from Turtle Island and Europe alike, along with almost every other culture I have been lucky enough to learn about. In stories from people who are in an ongoing relationship with their land, landscapes, planets, plants and animals they interact with are all beings in their own right. The sun, just like the food you eat, like the mountains you live upon, or the valleys you cultivate are all ancestors and worthy of respect. This may seem a bit out there (or sound like a Tumblr post from 2013), but the iron in our blood can only be created when the cores of stars fuse. Every precious metal on earth, every atom in our body came from the astronomical collisions of space dust billions of years ago. So doesn’t that make the sun an ancestor? Doesn’t that make the ocean a distant cousin?
Bringing this back to this time of the year. When family congregates for one reason or another, it feels fitting to me that the sun is also called in. Those we miss or those that cannot be there physically are no less present this time of year. Just like the sun, who though diminished, is still very much there.
So what are the lessons of this card? Mostly I feel they are in finding reverence in the people and places we call home. Not only that but recognise the beauty and recharging power of being around those with whom we share kinship (blood, spirit, interests or otherwise). The whimsical little creature on the horse reminds us to bring lightness and play into this week. To let joy shine out through all our pores. Even if we can’t find a white horse or a field full of sunflowers.
For this card, I also have a little warning, because even in the light there is darkness too. Just like with the real sun you can have too much of a good thing. We wear SPF for a reason and the rays of the sun are powerful enough to burn. In this season excess is very easy to slip into. Revelry for the sake of it. Celebrate what you must but try not to overdo it. This can also go for positivity, refusing to see anything but “the good” can leave your sight impaired. Just like if you stare at the sun for too long and start to get spots in your vision. Be joyous, be present, be safe.
This week consider: What beings do I call ‘home'? How can I show them my appreciation? What place do I feel at home? How can I show them my appreciation? How can I get to know my current environment like I would an old friend or relative? How can I show respect to where I am living? What bright joy can I bring to those around me? What do I need to feel recharged? Where am I seeking pleasure? How can I know when I am satisfied? What guidance do I need for the coming week? Where can I seek it out? Where can I offer guidance? Where can I find a white horse/field? What light-heartedness is feeling blocked for me at the moment?
As always I would love to hear what this brought up for you and how you are metabolising it into your own life. Shoot me an email or send me a comment.
