Hi all,
This Thursday you may be sensing a shift. A change in the air, a soft slowing down.
Astrologically speaking this week the planet Venus moves from the powerful sign of Aries into sensual Taurus. Think of this as the slip from the “chase” into the passion of a new relationship. What’s wonderful about Taurus is that it calls on us to be very present, to be in the tangible. When I think of moving with abundance I know no sign that does it better than Taurus.
I’ve put together a practice for you to help navigate this time along with a breakdown of what Venus in Taurus really means (literally and for you). My hope is that by working with the tarot, and a little astrology, you can better navigate abundance this spring…
Venus in Taurus
For those of you who are new to the astrology game, the phrase Venus in Taurus might mean close to nothing. I’m sure you have heard the phrase “Mercury is Gatorade” but what does it mean for a planet to be in something, or even to be retrograde?
To put it in simple terms, the whole sky can be split into 12 houses or signs. This means that the sky is literally divided into twelve chunks and within each of them falls a constellation that is also called a zodiac sign. Back in day, these constellations were used to track the changing seasons as each would only appear at certain times of the year. When you’re born the star sign you fall under is where the sun was in the sky at the time of your birth. Which chunk it was moving through.
Just like with the sun, the moon and planets in our solar system move through the signs of the zodiac (at least from our perspective here on earth). Some move very fast, like the moon which completes a full orbit of the earth every 28 days and thus moves through all the signs in that time. Others move much slower like Saturn or the further away planets like Neptune, which changes sign every few years.
So when a planet is said to be in a sign it means that from Earth, that planet can be seen in the chunk of the sky with that particular sign in it. When a planet is retrograde it means it is moving in a backwards motion, but that’s for another time.
On 15th March 2023, Venus will move into the sign of Taurus. Venus is the planet associated with romance, love, beauty, art and even money. I think of it as the planet of attraction, you can attract all sorts of things to you, not just people. Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac and represents security, comfort and worldly pleasures. With Venus in Taurus, it should be a great time to help you move into a space of more abundance, to attract in all sorts of worldly pleasures.
Navigating Abundance
I publish this a few days before the equinox. A time when the world is waking up, searching and getting ready to bloom. What a wonderful time to focus on bringing abundance into your life.
In our capitalist culture, we are taught that there is a scarcity of everything. This is something I grew up believing too. Something I am still trying to unstick from my psyche. We are told that there is not enough housing, not enough money, and not enough food. That our resources are so limited that we can’t possibly provide for every person. That we must earn a living instead of being able to live.
For the most part, this is a lie. There is enough food for billions more people, just not farmed how it is now (or meat in such quantities). There is enough money to pay everyone a basic income, but then what could people be threatened with? How could we be kept in line? There are more than enough houses, in fact, billions sit empty as "‘investments’ when they could be housing people. Scarcity is capitalism’s threat.
Abundance is a revolutionary act.
This is not to say anything like changing your mindset will undo the systemic oppression people encounter and endure. This is also not that people who have more financial stability are more spiritual. Or that private, personal abundance is going to set you free. But collective abundance, moving from a space of enough, is transformative.
When we work towards having enough we realise what we truly need, what we have in abundance and what we can give to others. When we notice that abundance around us we can be reassured that there will be enough in the future. Putting this in practical terms, when we share resources and knowledge with the intention of removing scarcity from the lives of others we will in turn receive.
It’s a lot of unlearning. To move from abundance. To tell ourselves and show ourselves that by sharing and giving and enjoying and living that our capacity for joy and enough will grow. By my gods is it worth it!
Venus in Taurus 🌹♉ Tarot Practice for
In the days after the equinox (15th March 2023) set aside some time for this tarot practice. I might suggest the 21st March, the night of the new moon, a great time for introspection and the growth that comes after.
You will need: Tarot cards/a tarot app. Candles/tea/whatever gets you in the zone. A journal.
Light a candle if you feel so inclined. Make your favourite tea. Put on your softest clothes or something that makes you feel floaty.
Invite in the elements if that's part of your practice.
Try to clear your mind, take deep purposeful breaths.
Begin to shuffle your cards, think about the new growth on the trees, the endless cycles of death and rebirth, the joy of new life, new projects. Think of the coming few weeks and what they may be like for you.
If cards jump out for you, great! If not let yourself pick five cards when ready. Arrange them in a cross in front of you. See the spread below for how to arrange them.
The first card shows your past relationship with abundance. If you grew up without feeling secure materially or emotionally, or if you have experienced oppression in its various forms this may show up. Your past is neither good nor bad. It merely explains why you might feel how you do.
The second card is your current relationship with abundance. This could be one of striving for balance, of feeling lack, or of feeling very stable but not appreciating the beauty of it. Again come to this card without judgement, as a snapshot.
The third card is your future relationship with abundance. This is how you are hoping to feel in the future, the areas in which you may feel the most abundant. When looking at this card try to visualise how it would feel to live in this way, to feel secure and supported. To receive and give freely knowing it will all return. If it helps, journal about this feeling as if you are already living it.
The fourth card is the external factors that will get you to that feeling of abundance. These can be the people you will meet or work with, that you can help or that can help you. This is where you can reach out. Think of this as a call-in, not a callout. If this card suggests you need to be more involved in something, it doesn’t mean you weren’t doing what you could in that area before. This card is where to focus outside yourself.
The fifth card is the internal factors that will move you towards the future feeling of abundance. What’s going on inside affects what’s going on outside. The microcosm is the macrocosm. So don’t neglect your internal work, your internal support. Remember we build ourselves so that we can take care of others. This card should show you a part of yourself that might need some extra love, a flame that needs tending.
Write as much or as little as you want on each of the cards, But try to come up with small practical things that you can move you towards that feeling.
Sit in reflection for as long as it takes for these thoughts to wash over you.
Thank the elements if you have called on them.
Extinguish your candle. Finish your tea.
Let loose some of the energy you built up: dance, sing, move, wash or cook. Do something that is active and enjoyable.
I always want to know how this felt for you, so please leave me a comment or shoot me an email if you want to talk through what you got.
